The experience

The activity starts at the RCC shop, where the guide fits you with climbing equipment, then drives you ten minutes by minivan to the base of Tafelberg. From the parking point, a fifteen-minute hike brings you to the via ferrata: a rock wall fitted with a fixed steel cable that you clip into as you climb. Unlike traditional rock climbing, where a partner belays you on a rope, you secure yourself to the cable and move at your own pace under the guide's watch. The cable carries you to the top of Tafelberg, a broad platform where you stop to take in the view from the Proa lookout point.

After a break at the summit, the guide walks you through the abseiling technique and safety procedures. You then rappel through el Abismo, a large opening in the rock face, descending from 50 meters of altitude. Beginners do this all the time. The guide controls the descent and talks you through each step. The whole outing takes three and a half hours from start to finish.

What’s included

What is a via ferrata and how is it different from rock climbing?

A via ferrata is a climbing route set along a rock wall with a fixed steel cable running the length of it. Instead of being belayed by a partner on a rope, you clip yourself to the cable as you climb, which means you move independently while staying safely attached to the rock face.

Do I need climbing experience to do this activity?

No. The guide gives clear instruction on technique and safety before you start, and beginners do this activity regularly. You climb and abseil under the guide's supervision, so experience is not required.

What happens at the Proa lookout point?

The Proa lookout point sits at the top of Tafelberg, where the via ferrata brings you. You take a short break there to rest and enjoy the view before moving on to the abseiling portion.

How high is the abseil through el Abismo?

El Abismo is a large opening in the rock at 50 meters of altitude. You rappel down through it under the guide's instruction and control.

What is included in the price?

The activity includes private transportation to and from the site, all climbing and abseiling equipment, and a licensed guide who speaks English, Spanish or Dutch.
