Grand Bassam City Tour & Craft Workshop Learn from Artisans
Walk the streets of Grand Bassam, then shape clay or wax with the hands that know how.
A guided city tour and craft workshop in Grand Bassam, a coastal town east of Abidjan, where you meet local artisans and make something with your own hands: pottery that dries over weeks, batik, jewelry or chocolate, depending on which workshop you choose. Private transport picks you up and brings you back. The guide speaks French. Children from age 5 are welcome. Lunch at a local restaurant is available after the pottery workshop but costs extra.

The experience
Grand Bassam sits close enough to Abidjan that you can reach it in an afternoon, but far enough that it feels separate: a small coastal town where the pace slows and the craftspeople still work by hand. Your guide, either Dorine or Aichatou, designed this tour after training in cultural hospitality, and it shows in the route: you walk through the town itself first, meeting inhabitants and seeing how the place is built, before moving into the workshop space where the real work begins.
The workshop is where the day changes shape. You choose one craft when you book (pottery, batik, jewelry or chocolate), and spend time with a craftsperson who actually makes their living this way. They show you the technique, hand you the materials, and let you try. With pottery, you'll shape clay on a wheel or by hand; with batik, you'll dye fabric using wax and indigo; with jewelry, you'll work metal or beads into something wearable; with chocolate, you'll learn to temper and mold. The pottery takes one to two weeks to dry after you leave, so it ships to you later or you collect it on a return visit. The other pieces you carry home the same day. This is not a demonstration. You're the one making it.
Private transport means the driver picks you up from your hotel and waits for you throughout the tour and workshop, so there's no negotiating shared schedules or finding your way back. Coconut water is included to drink during the day. The whole experience runs about four hours from start to finish.

Is this one for you?Book the pottery or batik workshop if you want to take home a finished piece the same day. Choose pottery if you don't mind waiting one to two weeks for it to dry and ship. The all-day chocolate workshop works best if you want to focus on a single craft and skip the city tour part. Private transport means you're not coordinating with other travelers or figuring out how to get back to your hotel. The driver handles both.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 17 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I choose which craft workshop I want to do?
Yes. When you book, you pick one: pottery, batik, jewelry or chocolate. There's also an all-day chocolate workshop option if you want to spend the full time on that single craft. Each one pairs with the city tour except the all-day chocolate option, which is chocolate only.
What happens to the pottery I make? Do I take it home the same day?
Pottery needs to dry for one to two weeks after you make it, so you can't carry it with you that day. You can arrange to collect it on a later visit to Grand Bassam, or the workshop can ship it to you if that works better for your travel plans.
Is lunch included in the tour?
Lunch is not included in the price, but after the pottery workshop you have the option to eat at one of the local restaurants in Grand Bassam. You pay separately for any meal you choose.
What's the difference between Grand Bassam and Abidjan?
Grand Bassam is a separate coastal town about an hour east of Abidjan. It's smaller, quieter and known for its craftspeople and heritage. Abidjan is the larger city where most visitors arrive. This tour takes you out to the smaller town where the artisans actually work.
Do I need to speak French to do this workshop?
Your guide speaks French. If you don't speak French, let the operator know when you book so they can arrange translation or pair you with someone who does speak your language if possible.
