experience

What’s the experience like?

The day started before sunrise—roosters were already making noise somewhere behind our hotel in Tamarindo. By 6:30am, our guide pulled up in a van, grinning and holding a thermos of strong local coffee. The drive to the Tenorio River took about two hours, winding past little roadside fruit stands and sleepy villages. I remember the air getting cooler as we climbed into the hills; you could smell wet earth and hear cicadas buzzing when we finally stepped out at the riverbank.

Our rafting crew handed out helmets and paddles—everything felt sturdy and well-used. After a quick safety chat (our guide switched easily between English and Spanish), we pushed off into the water. The first few rapids were playful, but then things got real fast: big splashes, sharp turns, and that rush when your stomach drops just before hitting a wave. At one point, I caught a glimpse of a blue morpho butterfly darting over the water while we waited for another raft to clear a tricky spot.

Lunch was simple but filling—rice, beans, grilled chicken, and fresh pineapple—served under a tin roof with river views. We swapped stories with other travelers while our clothes dried in the sun. On the ride back to Tamarindo, everyone was quiet for a while—tired but happy, still smelling faintly of river water and sunscreen.
