The experience

The hike starts early, 6 a.m. pickup from your hotel, and moves through rainforest toward the Celeste River, where the real draw happens. A freshwater river joins a volcanic-mineral river, and the mineral content turns the water an intense turquoise that you can see in only a handful of places on earth. The guide points out the exact spot where the two rivers meet and explains what creates the color. After time at the Blue Waterfall, the hike continues to the Teñideros sector for views of Tenorio Volcano and Cerro Montezuma.

Swimming happens at a local natural pool within the Celeste River itself, not in the protected national park areas, but in water that carries the same turquoise hue. You'll need a swimsuit and a towel. The guide brings you back to change into dry clothes before lunch. On the return route, there's a stop to spot local fauna, and the day wraps around 4 p.m. The hike sits at moderate difficulty and depends partly on rain and mud, so closed-toed shoes that can handle wet conditions matter.

Your guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese and manages both the commentary and the logistics: the private vehicle, the timing, the route choices if conditions shift. Lunch is a typical Costa Rican meal, and fruits and beverages come throughout the day. The operator is a small Costa Rican business that hires local guides and partners, so the experience carries direct contact with people who live in the region.

What’s included

  • Fruits and beverages throughout the day.
  • a typical Costa Rican lunch.
  • national park entrance fee.
  • private transportation from your hotel.
  • bilingual guide who manages the route and timing.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

What makes the Celeste River water turn that turquoise color?

A freshwater river meets a volcanic-mineral river at Tenorio Volcano Park, and the mineral content (particularly iron oxide and other volcanic compounds) creates the distinctive turquoise hue. The exact spot where the two rivers join is one of the stops on the hike.

Can I swim in the Celeste River during this tour?

Yes, but not in the national park protected areas. The guide takes you to a local natural pool within the Celeste River where the water is turquoise and safe for swimming. Bring a swimsuit and towel, and plan to change into dry clothes before lunch.

How long is the hike, and how difficult is it?

The full day runs about seven hours from a 6 a.m. departure to around 4 p.m. return. The hike itself is moderate level and depends on rain and mud conditions. Closed-toed shoes that can get wet are essential, and you should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness.

What is Arbol de la Paz?

Arbol de la Paz is a Ceiba Pentandra tree over 150 feet tall, known locally as a hidden gem. It's a stop on the way back from the main hike, before lunch.
