The experience

The Tenorio River rises at Tenorio Volcano in the Guanacaste mountain range and flows 15 scenic miles before joining the Corobicí River. You'll spend four hours paddling through sections dominated by Class III-IV white-water rapids, holding tight as you plunge through the cataracts and get sprayed with water. Between the harder sections, the river slows enough to look around at the forested banks and spot tropical birds in the canopy. A bilingual guide leads the group, and the operator provides all rafting equipment, hotel pickup and drop-off from Playa Flamingo, plus lunch.

The day starts with A/C transportation from your hotel to the river. You'll need to bring sandals, mosquito repellent, sun block, hat and sunglasses. The activity requires a high level of physical fitness and is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or pregnant travelers. A minimum of two people is required to operate each departure, so book early if you're traveling solo or in a small group.
