Watch wildlife from a raft on the Sarapiqui, not from a trail

A safari float on the Sarapiqui River in Costa Rica puts you on the water for 2 ½ hours drifting past jungle reserves where sloths, otters, birds and iguanas live. A professional guide (in English or Spanish) leads the float, provides a lifejacket and helmet, and stops for tropical fruit snacks and a traditional Costa Rican lunch at the riverside base afterward.

The experience

The Sarapiqui River runs alongside some of Costa Rica's most biodiverse reserves, and floating it keeps you low and quiet: the way wildlife actually appears. You start at the operation center, change into what you need, then push off for the drift. The current does most of the work. Your guide watches the banks and the canopy, pointing out what moves. Sloths hang in the trees above the water. Otters surface near the raft. Tropical birds call from the branches, and iguanas sun themselves on rocks. The float takes 2 ½ hours, and the pace is slow enough that you see things, not a blur of stops.

Halfway through, the guide pulls over for a snack of tropical fruits. When you reach the riverside facilities, you sit down to a traditional Costa Rican lunch with a natural drink, still in the sound of the river. The whole day runs about three hours from start to finish. You wear a lifejacket and helmet the entire float. Both are provided. The guide speaks English or Spanish, and if you need a vegetarian meal, you can request it when you book.

What animals will I actually see on the Sarapiqui float?

How long is the float itself, and what happens before and after?

The float lasts 2 ½ hours on the water. Before you start, you use the operation center to change and use the toilets. After you finish, you eat a traditional Costa Rican lunch at the riverside facilities with a natural drink included.

Do I need experience to float the Sarapiqui, or is it safe for beginners?

The float is suitable for all physical fitness levels. You wear a lifejacket and helmet the entire time, both provided. The current carries the raft, so you do not paddle or steer. The guide handles the raft and navigation.
