The Casona is a museum inside the national park, not outside it.

A guided nature and history tour at Santa Rosa National Park, 35 minutes from Liberia, combines a flat 2km forest walk with a visit to the Casona, the historic hacienda house central to Costa Rica's 1856 defense against invasion. The trail winds through the only dry tropical forest in Mesoamerica, where wildlife like eagles, deer, coati mundi and tapirs move through ancient trees and massive root systems. The experience takes about 2.5 hours total, including both the forest and the museum.

The experience

The park sits 35 minutes from Liberia via Route 1, a straightforward drive with light traffic. Once inside, the 2km trail is flat and easy to walk, built so anyone can move through it comfortably. The dry tropical forest here is the only one of its kind left in Mesoamerica: a rare ecosystem where the trees are old enough to have shaped the landscape for centuries, their roots spreading across the forest floor in patterns you won't see anywhere else in the region.

Wildlife appears throughout the day without fanfare: hawks and eagles overhead, snakes in the undergrowth, deer stepping across the path, coati mundi foraging near the trail, and if you're patient, tapirs moving deeper into the forest. The forest itself is the draw, not a viewing platform or a scheduled sighting. After the walk, you reach the Casona, the hacienda house that became the center of Costa Rica's history when filibusters invaded in 1856. The house now functions as a museum, and the park is the only protected wilderness area in Costa Rica that holds a historical museum inside its boundaries. The two pieces (the ancient forest and the moment that shaped the nation) sit together in one place.

Rain doesn't stop the tour. An umbrella or poncho lets you move through the forest in wet weather and still see the animals and the trees. The drive into the park itself shows wildlife and nature constantly, so the experience begins before you step onto the trail.
