The experience

Rio Celeste gets its brilliant turquoise color from a chemical reaction between volcanic minerals in the water. The tour starts with private pickup from your hotel in Playa Flamingo and a drive toward Tenorio Volcano National Park. You'll pass through Liberia if you want to stop, otherwise the route goes straight through. Once at the park, you walk the riverbed itself, moving through primary humid and rainforest where the ecosystem supports sloths, frogs and other fauna easily spotted from the trail.

The waterfall is the centerpiece (a fast-flowing cascade fed by the colored water), but the day also takes you to Teñideros, where two water sources meet and the color shifts from light turquoise to vivid blue in front of you. You'll visit natural hot springs in the area. The walk covers several kilometers through the forest, so comfortable hiking shoes and water are essential. The operator provides bottled water and lunch is included. Air-conditioned transport means you're not hiking to or from the park in the heat.
