The Experience

The Ocean King catamaran departs Pez Vela Marina at either 2pm or 9am, depending on which departure you choose. If you need a ride from your hotel in Manuel Antonio or Quepos, pickup is included — just let the operator know when you book. You'll arrive at the marina by 1:40pm (afternoon tour) or earlier (morning tour), check in, get a security briefing, and board a boat that carries the weight of its own bar, two hot tubs, and two winding water slides built into the deck. The catamaran is 100 feet long and designed around the idea that a day on the water doesn't have to be about sitting still.

From 2 to 4pm (afternoon tour timing), you're in the water or on the boat watching for dolphins and sea turtles along the Manuel Antonio coastline — the wild vegetation of the national park runs right down to the water. The jacuzzis are there if you want to soak instead. Between 4 and 5pm, you snorkel with gear provided at no extra cost, take runs down the water slides, and eat — filet fish with rice, vegetables and salad if that's what you ordered, or chicken if you gave advance notice. The boat returns to Pez Vela by 5:30 or 6pm. Four alcoholic drinks or cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks, fresh fruit and snacks come with the ticket. A live guide in English or Spanish is on board the whole time.

The boat is wheelchair accessible, and the transportation to and from your hotel is too. Infants can come in a stroller or car seat. Vegetarian meals are available if you request one at booking. No shoes or smoking on deck — that's the only rule that might surprise you. The main draw here isn't a chance to see rare fish; it's the combination of snorkeling, slides, hot tubs and a meal all in one afternoon or morning, without having to arrange any of it yourself.
