The experience

You know that feeling when you step off a long flight and just want things to go smoothly? That’s exactly what happened when we landed at Juan Santamaría International. Our driver was right there at arrivals, holding up my name: no confusion, no waiting around in the humid air. The van was spotless and cool inside (big relief after the sticky airport), with plenty of space for our bags and even a bottle of water ready for each of us.

On the way out of San José, our driver, Carlos, pointed out little roadside fruit stands and told us about his favorite soda (that’s what they call local diners here). We asked if we could stop for a quick snack. He pulled over at a spot with fresh pineapple juice and homemade empanadas. The road winds through green hills, sometimes you catch a whiff of rain on warm pavement or hear birds calling from the trees. If you need a bathroom break or want to snap a photo of the volcano in the distance, just ask. They’re happy to stop.

I noticed families with strollers and even someone traveling with their dog. Everyone seemed comfortable. If your flight’s late (ours almost was), they’ll wait for you at no extra charge. It’s all super relaxed but organized. I liked that everything (fuel, tolls, insurance) was included in the price, so no surprises at the end.
