The experience

You depart from the Quepos marina on a 25-foot boat and head out along the Pacific coast toward Manuel Antonio. The guides share information about the hidden beaches, environment and wildlife of the zone during the 15 to 20 minute run to the reefs. Once you reach the spearfishing spots (selected by the local guides based on current conditions), the crew gives you a brief introduction to rubber spearguns, freediving technique and safety before you enter the water.

In the water, you hunt under your instructor's guidance, targeting fish like cubera snapper, red snapper, snook and barracuda in the colorful reef environment. The guide stays with you throughout, offering real-time direction and ensuring your safety. After you've had time to spear, the crew pulls you back aboard and serves a refreshing fruit snack with water and sodas while you head to the next reef spots. On the return, the boat passes by the islands of Manuel Antonio National Park so you can take in the coastal views before heading back to the marina.

All spearfishing equipment (rubber spear guns, masks and flippers) is provided. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Italian, and hotel pickup is included in the booking. You'll need a valid spearfishing license, which costs $50 per person and is arranged online before the tour.
