Palo Verde National Park boat tour
- Drive 1 hour 35 minutes to river
- Enjoy 2-hour guided boat cruise
- Watch wildlife: birds, monkeys, reptiles
- End tour with typical Costa Rican meal
The experience
You're picked up from your hotel in Playa Flamingo and driven roughly an hour and a half inland through the countryside to reach the river. The drive itself passes through rural Costa Rica: cattle ranches, small towns, the landscape opening up as you approach the water. Once at the dock, you board a motor boat built for 20 to 25 passengers and head out onto the Tempisque River, which centuries ago served as the main transport route for people, cattle and sugar cane across the region.
The two-hour cruise is built around what lives along the banks. Herons, egrets, ibis and storks line the water's edge. The river holds one of Central America's largest concentrations of bird species. Crocodiles sun themselves on rocks, iguanas perch in the same spots, and monkeys move through the trees overhead: white-faced monkeys and howler monkeys both hunt for leaves and fruit in the canopy. Your guide, bilingual in English and Spanish, points out what appears and explains the ecosystem as you drift past. There's no strenuous activity. You stay seated the whole time, which is why families with young children and older travelers find this tour manageable.
After the boat returns to the dock, you head back to Playa Flamingo with breakfast and a typical Costa Rican lunch included. The whole outing takes about five hours from pickup to drop-off.
