The Experience
The first thing I noticed when we left the car was how the air changed—thicker, with that earthy scent you only get deep in Costa Rica’s jungle. Our guide, Daniel, handed out helmets and harnesses right there at the trailhead. The hike itself wasn’t long, maybe 30 minutes, but we crossed at least three little creeks where my shoes got soaked (bring an extra pair if you can). You’ll hear birds you won’t see and sometimes catch a whiff of wild ginger along the path.
The waterfall’s called “the bad night”—locals say it roars loudest after heavy rain. Standing at the top, I could barely hear Daniel over the water. He showed us how to work the ropes and let us practice on a dry patch before anyone went near the edge. When it was my turn to rappel, my heart thumped so hard I almost missed his signal to start. The water hits your legs as soon as you lean back—cold but not freezing—and you’re halfway down before you realize your hands are shaking from excitement more than nerves. If you want to go again, just ask; they’ll let you take another run if there’s time.
