What’s the experience like?

There’s something about the air in Monteverde just after sunrise—cool, a little damp, and full of birdsong. We met our guide near the Ficus Trails entrance, coffee still warming my hands. He gave us a quick rundown of what we might see—over 450 species call this place home, and honestly, you never know what’ll show up. The group was small enough that everyone could hear the guide’s stories (and his uncanny ability to mimic a toucan call).

The trails wind through thick forest where sunlight filters down in patches.
