The experience

The first thing I noticed stepping out of Liberia Airport was the thick, warm air, not hot exactly, just heavy with that sweet, earthy smell you only get in Costa Rica after a rain. Our driver, José, was waiting right where he said he’d be (holding a sign with my name, which always feels a bit surreal). He smiled and waved us over like we were old friends. I fumbled with my Spanish and he switched to English so easily it made me laugh. The van was cool inside, almost too much after the humidity outside, but honestly, I didn’t mind.

We set off toward our hotel in Guanacaste and I kept catching glimpses of fields through the window: cows standing under trees, kids on bikes waving as we passed. José pointed out a fruit stand along the road and told us about “mamon chino” season. He said we had to try them before leaving. The drive itself was quiet in that way you only get when someone else is handling everything. No GPS stress or figuring out which lane to be in. Bottled water appeared from nowhere (I still don’t know where he kept it) and my partner fell asleep halfway through. I watched the sky go from gray to blue as we got closer to Tamarindo Beach.

I didn’t expect to feel so at ease on what’s basically just an airport transfer, but there’s something about being picked up by someone who knows every twist of these roads that makes you relax a little deeper into your seat. When we pulled up at our Airbnb, José helped with bags and gave us his WhatsApp for the return trip (“Just text me if you need anything,” he said). It felt more personal than any shuttle I’ve taken before. Maybe it’s silly but I still think about how simple that first hour in Costa Rica felt: no rush, just letting someone else take the wheel for once.
