Step-by-step itinerary
Mangrove kayaking and meal stop

- Spot wildlife like monkeys and birds
- Stop at Tucanes Tours center for meal
- Use bathroom facilities at tour center
The experience
You start from your Jacó hotel and travel to the Damas Island launch point, where the guide fits you into a kayak and walks through the basics before you push off into the mangrove estuaries. The waterways narrow and widen as you paddle, and the guide steers the route toward the spots where animals congregate: the branches where howler monkeys call, the shallows where egrets wade, the deeper channels where fish break the surface. The mangrove ecosystem here is the largest in Central America, which means the wildlife density is high enough that sightings are routine, not lucky breaks.
Midway through, you stop at the Tucanes Tours Operation Center for bathroom access and to eat. The guide provides lunch or dinner depending on your tour time, and you have a chance to rest before heading back out onto the water for the second half of the paddle. The return follows a different route through the mangrove, so you see new sections and new animals rather than retracing your path.
Kids as young as eight can join by sharing a kayak with an adult, and the guide speaks English or Spanish. The whole outing takes six hours from pickup to drop-off.

Is this one for you?The paddle is moderate in pace and effort (you're moving through calm estuaries, not whitewater), but six hours on the water means you need to be comfortable sitting upright in a kayak for long stretches. If you have a free afternoon in Jacó and want to see wildlife without hiking, this route keeps you on the water where animals are easiest to spot.
