The Experience
Hands gripping the rail, I peered over the Tarcoles River bridge and tried not to flinch when our guide pointed out a crocodile’s tail sliding through the muddy water below. The air smelled like wet earth and diesel from passing trucks — not exactly postcard stuff, but real. Someone behind me laughed nervously; I guess we all did. That was just the first twenty minutes of this Isla Tortuga day trip from Jaco, and already my heart was thumping.
After that, we rolled on toward Negritos Island. Our group was small enough that Li, our guide (who grew up near Puntarenas), actually remembered everyone’s name by the second stop. He whistled softly to call out a family of spider monkeys — they swung above us in the trees, one little guy pausing to stare back. Li told us how he’d watched this same troop grow up over years guiding here. I tried to say “mono araña” in Spanish and got it wrong; Li just grinned and corrected me. The boat ride itself was choppy but not rough — salty wind in my face, sun bouncing off the water, someone pointing out dolphins off portside for about half a minute before they vanished.
Tortuga Island came into view all bright sand and palm shadows. No crowds where we landed — just our group picking spots under almond trees while lunch was set up nearby (rice, grilled fish, fruit that tasted like actual sunshine). Snorkeling gear was laid out for us; I hesitated at first because honestly I’m not much of a swimmer, but ended up floating above schools of blue-yellow fish anyway. There was coffee after lunch if you wanted it — strong enough to jolt you awake even after swimming.
We stopped at this old stone arch on Nicoya before heading back — waves crashing through it louder than I expected. By then everyone was sticky with salt and sunscreen but kind of quiet too; maybe tired or maybe just soaking it in. On the way back to Jaco I kept thinking about those monkeys watching us as much as we watched them. That feeling stuck with me for days.
