The Experience

Hands gripping the rail, I peered over the Tarcoles River bridge and tried not to flinch when our guide pointed out a crocodile’s tail sliding through the muddy water below. The air smelled like wet earth and diesel from passing trucks — not exactly postcard stuff, but real. Someone behind me laughed nervously; I guess we all did.
