You’ll leave San Jose behind for a real Costa Rica adventure—ziplining above rainforest, riding horseback to jungle pools or tasting cacao straight from the pod. Guides share local stories as you pick two activities (ATV waterfalls? Surfing? Chocolate?). Lunch is included and so is that feeling you’ll want to hold onto long after you’re back in town.
“Don’t forget—if you fall off the horse, just laugh and get back on,” our guide Carlos grinned as we tightened our helmets in Vista Los Sueños. He’d already made us practice saying “pura vida” three times before we even left San Jose. I still can’t roll the ‘r’ right. The drive out of the city was early and kind of foggy, but by the time we hit the Central Pacific hills, everything was green and loud—parrots overhead, some truck honking somewhere behind us. I kept sticking my head out the window like a dog.
I picked ziplining (because heights freak me out) and the chocolate tour (because why not). My friend went full adrenaline with ATVs. The guides were all locals—Carlos told stories about his grandma’s cacao farm while we sampled raw beans (they taste weirdly fruity at first). On the zipline platform, my hands shook a bit but it was more from excitement than fear. You could see all the way to Herradura Bay if you squinted past the mist. There was this moment when I just hung there, legs dangling over rainforest—quiet except for cicadas and someone’s nervous laughter behind me. That part stuck with me.
Lunch was buffet-style in their open-air Jungle Restaurant; rice, beans, grilled chicken, fresh pineapple juice that tasted like sunshine (I had three glasses). People from Orotina sat near us and joked about city folks being scared of mud. Afterward I watched some kids try surfing lessons down at Jaco Beach—looked harder than it seems on Instagram. We all ended up muddy anyway after the ATVs came back splattered top to bottom.
Honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed after so much activity. Maybe it’s something about being far from San Jose noise—or maybe it’s just how everyone here moves slower, smiles wider. Even now I still think about that view from the zipline platform when things get hectic back home.
