The experience
The trail starts at the base of Cerro Tortuguero, a small inactive volcano that formed roughly 1.8 billion years ago. You climb a clearly marked path through exuberant vegetation, stopping to spot wildlife with your guide's help. The hike takes you steadily upward through the jungle canopy, and the guide shares the ecology and animal behavior as you move: what to listen for, where to look, which plants matter to the animals that live here.
At the summit, 390 feet above the starting point, you get panoramic views across the Caribbean coast and back into the jungle. The whole experience runs about three hours. Your guide speaks English or Spanish, and the operator provides binoculars so you can see birds and distant wildlife clearly, plus rain hats and rubber boots if the trail is wet.
Trail entrance costs $2.26 per person (adults and children the same rate) and is purchased separately on the SINAC website before you go. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need to reach the trailhead.
