Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Salt Cathedral and Zipaquirá center

  • Pickup at accommodation
  • Travel to Salt Cathedral
  • Explore Salt Cathedral
  • Visit historic center of Zipaquirá
  • Return to accommodation

The experience

The Salt Cathedral is built inside a former salt mine, and the tour takes you down into chambers where miners once worked and where the cathedral now stands. A guide in Spanish walks you through the main basilica and the smaller chapels, explaining the mining history and the religious significance of the space. An English audioguide is also available if you prefer to move at your own pace through parts of it. The entire underground complex takes a couple of hours to explore, depending on how long you linger at each stop.

After the cathedral, you'll spend time in Zipaquirá's historic center, a colonial neighborhood with narrow streets, old plazas, and local shops. This is where you get a sense of the town itself, separate from the tourist draw of the mine. Lunch is typical Colombian food with a drink included, eaten somewhere in the town. The whole experience (travel, cathedral, town, and meal) runs from morning through early afternoon, with about an hour of driving each way from Bogotá.

The vehicle picks you up at your hotel and waits for you throughout the day, so there's no hunting for transport between stops or worrying about schedules. You're dropped back at the same place you started. This setup works well if you have a full day free and want to see both the cathedral and the town without the logistics of getting there yourself.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (14 to 17 years); Child (3 to 13 years); Infant (under 3): free.

What is the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral actually like inside?

The Salt Cathedral is an underground basilica carved into a former salt mine 180 meters below ground. It has a main chapel and smaller side chapels, with salt sculptures and lighting throughout. The space is cool and stable year-round, and the scale is impressive. It's a working church as well as a historical site.

How much time do I spend at the cathedral versus the town?

The cathedral itself takes a couple of hours to walk through with a guide. The historic center of Zipaquirá takes additional time to explore on foot, and lunch is included in that part of the day. The rest of the time is spent traveling to and from Bogotá, which is about an hour each way.

Will I have a guide the whole time, or just at the cathedral?

A Spanish-speaking guide leads you through the cathedral. For the historic center, you can walk on your own or use the English audioguide if available. The driver stays with the vehicle and is available for transport between stops.

What happens if I don't speak Spanish?

The guide speaks Spanish, and an English audioguide is provided so you can follow along at your own pace through parts of the cathedral. For the historic center, you'll be exploring on foot without a guide, so it's self-directed.

Is the Salt Cathedral accessible if I have mobility concerns?

The cathedral is wheelchair accessible, and all areas and surfaces are wheelchair-accessible. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller throughout the tour.
