The experience

The tour starts in Patillal, a town built around Vallenato music and the region's musical heritage. You'll walk the streets past traditional houses, visit the church and the Parque de los Compositores, and see the monument to Rafael Escalona and the sculpture of the four Vallenato winds. Along the way you taste local sweets, buy handmade crafts, and meet living legends: poets and composers who still draw inspiration from the valley itself.

From there the route climbs into the Sierra Nevada, where the landscape shifts to steep terrain carved by rivers. You'll see the Río Badillo, a cold clear stream running through ancient canyons with dramatic rock formations, and visit the gardens where native fruits grow. The Kankuama women demonstrate their weaving (intricate patterns in wool and fique fiber made by hand), and you learn about the ceremonial sites that mark the spiritual boundaries of their world. The guide explains the territory as the indigenous people understand it: a valley held together by rivers and guardian hills.

The final stretch takes you through streets of precolumbian-style stone architecture, where you taste tinto serrano, the traditional mountain liquor, and experience the greeting customs of the community. Lunch is a regional dish eaten together, followed by a swim in the Río Candela, where warm cascades flow over granite boulders carved into natural shapes. The whole day runs about seven hours and stays suitable for all fitness levels.
