The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the salty breeze—warm, but not too heavy. We met our instructor just outside the little café, where the smell of fresh Colombian coffee mixed with sunscreen and sea air. Before anything else, we grabbed a cup and sat under a palm for a quick intro about how waves work. It wasn’t some dry lecture—our guide, Andrés, used a stick to draw in the sand, showing us how the current moves right at Punta de Buritaca.

Boards tucked under our arms, we walked maybe ten minutes down a sandy path. You could hear the waves before you saw them—steady and inviting. The beach splits into two spots: close to shore for beginners (the “inside”), and further out for those who already know their way around a board (“outside”). I started inside; my friend went out further with another instructor. They kept groups tiny—just three of us per coach—so it felt personal. There was plenty of feedback after each try; sometimes you’d wipe out and come up laughing, saltwater in your nose, but always learning something new.

Afterwards, we rinsed off and hung out by the pool at the hostel next door. Some folks played volleyball while others just lounged with another round of coffee as the sun dipped low. If you’re hungry, there’s a restaurant right there too—nothing fancy but good local food. The vibe is relaxed; nobody’s rushing you off the beach or out of the water.
