The experience
The tour starts at the Magdalena Straight, the narrowest point where Colombia's main river crosses on its way to the sea, surrounded by Andean forest. From there the jeep heads to Obando, a small town a few kilometers away that holds tombs similar to those in the Tierradentro Archaeological Park. The local museum displays artifacts older than those found in San Agustín itself, including a replica of the "Winged Fish," a goldsmith piece whose original sits in Bogotá's Gold Museum.
The route then moves to Alto de los Ídolos, the second-densest site of tombs and statues from the Augustinian culture after San Agustín's main archaeological park. Next comes Alto de las Piedras, where the enigmatic "Double Yo" statue stands. Before returning to San Agustín, the tour passes Salto Mortino, an almost 200-meter waterfall that closes out the afternoon.
Private transportation is included throughout, as are entrance fees to Obando and Salto Mortino. You can book with a Spanish-speaking driver or upgrade to a bilingual guide who speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language. The guide option gives you deeper context at each stop. The full day runs seven to eight hours, and the jeep accommodates your group alone.
