The experience

Seven to eight hours means you start early and move through the day at a pace that lets the guide tell the stories behind each stop instead of rushing between them. The morning begins at Plaza de Paloquemao, a working market where you taste seasonal fruits (curubas, lulos, cherimoyas, chontaduros, loquats) that come straight from Colombian fields. The Gold Museum comes next, where you see how indigenous artisans created pieces like the Pororo and the Sacred Boat using ancient techniques. The guide explains the legend of El Dorado and the sacred lagoons tied to each object. (The museum is closed Mondays, so the operator swaps in another activity that day.)

La Candelaria, Bogotá's oldest neighborhood, is where the colonial architecture and the stories converge. You walk streets lined with colorful houses and stop at Chorro de Quevedo, the birthplace of the city, to try chicha. An ancestral drink you can mix with passion fruit, pineapple or red berries. The Botero Museum occupies a former archbishop's palace from 1733. Inside are the voluptuous, round-bodied figures the artist is known for, and the guide walks you through the allegorical world he created. (Closed Tuesdays, another activity substitutes.) Plaza de Bolívar, where Colombia's independence cry was born, holds the oldest school in Latin America and a church hiding one of the country's finest pieces of colonial art.

The day ends with tejo, a Colombian game you play while eating typical regional dishes, drinking beer and talking with locals. You rent the court for an hour and the operator arranges the space. Lunch, drinks and the court rental are separate costs. The bilingual guide stays throughout, and the air-conditioned vehicle handles all transport between stops.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (11 to 17 years); Child (6 to 10 years); Infant (1 to 5 years).

What is tejo and why do Colombians play it?

Tejo is Colombia's national sport: players throw metal discs at a board to hit small explosive charges buried in clay, which creates a loud pop when struck. It is a social game played in courts across the country, and locals gather to play, eat and drink together: the way the operator's grandfather and his friends spent their afternoons.

What can I expect to see inside the Botero Museum?

The Botero Museum displays the work of Fernando Botero, a major Colombian figurative artist known for paintings and sculptures of voluptuous, rounded figures. The collection fills the rooms of a 1733 archbishop's palace in La Candelaria, and the guide explains the allegorical and symbolic meanings behind the pieces.

Will I have time to visit both the Gold Museum and the Botero Museum in one day?

Yes, both museums are included in the seven to eight-hour itinerary. The Gold Museum comes in the morning after the fruit market, and the Botero Museum is the fourth stop. If either museum is closed on your date (Gold on Mondays, Botero on Tuesdays), the operator substitutes another activity so the day stays full.

What are the typical dishes I'll eat during the tour?

The tour includes a tasting of seasonal fruits at the market and a drink of chicha (an ancestral beverage mixed with fruits like passion fruit and pineapple) at Chorro de Quevedo. Lunch and drinks during the tejo game at the end are separate. The guide can recommend what to order, and you'll eat regional specialties alongside local players.
