The Experience

We were already bumping along the road south of Medellin when I realized how much the air had changed—cooler, sharper, almost sweet. Our guide, Andrés, handed me a banana and grinned like he’d seen this nervous energy before. It was early but the mountains looked awake already. By the time we reached Camilo C, my hands smelled faintly of coffee from the little shop where we stopped—dark roast, almost chocolatey. The locals nodded as we clumsily tried to order snacks; I butchered “arequipe” and got a laugh out of it.

The first stretch of our mountain bike tour felt like rolling through someone’s memory—old railway tracks turned into this bumpy path winding past coffee farms and faded bridges. Andrés pointed out where trains used to run a hundred years ago. Sometimes you could hear water rushing before you saw it—a waterfall hidden behind thick green leaves, mist cooling our faces as we stopped for a drink. There was a moment when I thought I’d lost everyone on a downhill curve, but then heard laughter echoing back up the trail. So yeah, not exactly Tour de France pace but nobody seemed to mind.

Lunch happened on plastic chairs in front of another waterfall—rice, beans, grilled chicken that tasted smoky and real after the ride. Cold beer too (I’m not usually a beer person but it just fit). The last bit toward Los Palomos was mostly flat; my legs felt tired in that good way. Someone handed out ice cream at the end—simple vanilla—and honestly it tasted better than any dessert back home. On the drive back to Medellin I watched sunlight flicker through eucalyptus trees and thought about how quiet those old tracks must’ve been before us.
