The Experience
We stepped out of the taxi into that thick Medellín air—warm, a little electric. EGEO’s rooftop was already buzzing when we got there (I was maybe five minutes late, but our guide Camilo just grinned and handed me something citrusy in a glass). City lights everywhere, people laughing in Spanish and English. Someone spilled a bit of their drink on my shoe and apologized in perfect British. It felt like the kind of place where you could actually talk to strangers without it being weird. Camilo pointed out the mountains around El Poblado—hard to believe how green they look at night.
After that first round, we drifted to YUZU Rooftop. The elevator ride up was awkwardly silent except for the hum of reggaeton leaking through someone’s headphones. Up top though—music, neon lights bouncing off everyone’s faces, that faint smell of fried plantains from somewhere below. I tried to order an aguardiente but totally butchered the pronunciation; Li (from our group) laughed so hard she almost dropped her empanada. Speaking of which—the empanadas were hot, greasy in the best way, with this spicy ají sauce that made my nose run a little. There’s something about eating street food with new friends that just feels right.
We cut through Provenza next—honestly, I lost track of which club was which after Mosquito Rooftop because everything blurred into bass and colored lights. At Teatro Victoria, Camilo waved us past the line like he owned the place (VIP entry is no joke here). Inside: bodies moving everywhere, sweat and perfume mixing in the air. The DJ played some old-school salsa and even the shyest guy in our group tried dancing. I’m not sure if I’ll ever hear that song again without thinking about this night.
The last stop was La Oculta—a hidden spot with low ceilings and reggaeton so loud you feel it in your ribs. By then my Spanish had gotten better (or maybe just braver). We stumbled out sometime after 3am, shoes sticky from spilled drinks and heads full of Medellín’s nighttime energy. Still can’t decide if it was the music or just being part of this wild mix of locals and travelers that made it stick with me.
