The Experience

I didn’t expect to start the day in Poblado Square watching a street vendor balancing fresh mango slices on a cart — the kind of thing you’d miss if you were just rushing through. Our guide, Andrés, waved us over with that easy Antioquian warmth and pointed out how even the graffiti here tells its own story. The city was already humming by 9am, but it felt like we had our own little pocket of calm for a minute.

We zigzagged through Lleras Park (it’s louder than I thought in the mornings — birds and motorcycles competing), then up Nutibara Hill where the air actually smelled different, greener somehow. Pueblito Paisa sits up there like a movie set, all white walls and red tiles. I tried a tiny buñuelo from one of the stalls — hot, salty-sweet — and Li laughed when I tried to say “gracias” in perfect Spanish (I did not nail it). The view over Medellin is wild; you see how the city just spills between mountains. I still think about that view sometimes.

Barefoot Park was next — kids running around barefoot on wet stones while office workers hurried past. Andrés told us locals come here to cool off or just breathe for a second during lunch breaks. We stopped at Plaza Botero too, where those big bronze sculptures are way more playful in person than they look in photos. There was this older couple posing by the fat cat statue; she kept fixing his hair before every picture. It made me smile.

The whole day felt less like ticking off sights and more like wandering through someone else’s routine — seeing City Hall, the old railroad station (which honestly looks like it could tell some stories), and finally the cathedral with its heavy wooden doors. The weather kept shifting from sun to clouds but nobody seemed to mind much; people just kept moving, chatting, living their lives around us.
