Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Guatavita and surroundings

  • Pick up from your location
  • Visit Laguna de Guatavita
  • Explore Guatavita town
  • See Tominé Reservoir
  • Return to Bogotá

The experience

Guatavita Lagoon sits at the center of this tour: an ancient ceremonial site where the Muisca people once held religious rituals and initiation ceremonies. The lagoon is a mirror of water ringed by vegetation, and it carries the weight of centuries: it inspired the legend of El Dorado, the lost city of gold that explorers hunted across South America. Your guide, a local who speaks English or Spanish, walks you through what the site meant and what it still means to the region.

The day moves through four stops. After pickup from your hotel or chosen point in Bogotá, you reach the lagoon first. Then you move into Guatavita town itself (stone paths, colonial architecture, local restaurants), where you get a sense of how people live in the highlands. Tominé Reservoir, an artificial lake built for hydroelectric power, offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. On the return, you pass Tequendama Falls before heading back to Bogotá. The full route takes seven to eight hours.

Entry to all sites is covered in the price. You also get a typical Colombian snack, bottled water throughout the day, a souvenir to take home, and medical insurance included in the booking. Your guide handles the logistics. You show up and move through the day without arranging transport or worrying about tickets.

Is this one for you?A private tour means you travel with your own group and guide, not a shared bus with strangers, so the pace and stops stay under your control. This works best if you want a personalized experience and don't mind a full day of travel (seven to eight hours on the road and at sites) to see the lagoon, the town and the reservoir in one outing.
