Two Hours on the Water as Cartagena's Old City Turns Gold

You board at La Bodeguita dock and spend two hours cruising Cartagena's internal bay toward Isla Grande, watching the Walled City and Clock Tower light up as the sun sets. Your drink and appetizer arrive early so you can focus on the water and the light. The boat stays small and moves at a pace that lets you actually see what's in front of you instead of rushing through it. Bring your ID and sunscreen, and plan to be back on land by dark.

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Board boat at La Bodeguita dock
  • Sit comfortably and view Walled City
  • Cruise internal bay of Cartagena
  • Reach sunset viewing point

The Experience

"The light here at six o'clock, it changes everything," our captain said as we settled into the boat at La Bodeguita dock, and he wasn't exaggerating. The sunset cruise in Cartagena is exactly what it sounds like — you board a boat, sit down with a cold drink in hand, and watch the Walled City and its iconic Clock Tower catch the last of the day's sun. The whole thing takes two hours, and it moves slowly enough that you're not rushing through it, but fast enough that you feel like you're actually going somewhere. The route takes you through Cartagena's internal bay toward Isla Grande, the point where the sun actually drops, and the water between you and the old fortifications shifts from blue to orange to something that doesn't have a name.

What makes this different from standing on the malecón is the angle. The city's profile — the domes, the colonial rooflines, the walls themselves — reads completely different from the water. You're not looking at postcards; you're looking at the thing the postcards were made from, and it's wider and stranger and more textured than any photograph. The boat stays small, which means you're not packed in with a hundred other people all trying to get the same shot. There's room to move, to sit, to actually notice what's happening instead of just documenting it.

Included is a beer, a glass of wine, or a soft drink — one unit, so you can pace yourself — and an appetizer to go with it. The drink arrives as soon as you sit, and the food comes out before the light really starts to change, so you're not fumbling with a plate when the moment happens. Bring your own sunscreen and a towel if you want one; the sun is still strong even as it's leaving. You'll need your passport number or ID document when you board, and if you're traveling with infants or small children, strollers are fine. The dock is near public transportation, so getting there isn't complicated.
