Summary

Afro-Caribbean Dance Class in Cartagena’s Old Town

If you want to really feel Cartagena—not just see it—this dance workshop is your ticket in. You’ll learn salsa and champeta from locals, sip a cocktail, and leave sweaty, happy, and maybe a little more confident on the dance floor.

experience

What’s the experience like?

Stepping into the studio, you’ll hear the music before you see the dance floor—those quick salsa beats bouncing off the old brick walls, mixed with the faint scent of coconut oil from someone’s hair. Our instructor, Camila, greeted us with a grin and handed out icy cocktails (mine had a slice of fresh lime floating on top). It was just what I needed to shake off the sticky Cartagena heat and loosen up my shoulders.

We started slow, warming up with some moves that felt odd at first—hips rolling, shoulders loose, feet sliding on the cool tiles. Camila explained how salsa isn’t just about steps; it’s about feeling the rhythm in your bones. She clapped out the beat, and suddenly I could pick out the cowbell and trumpet in the music. Even if you’ve got two left feet, you’ll find yourself grinning as you catch on.

After an hour of salsa spins and laughs (and a few missteps), we switched to champeta. The energy changed—faster, louder, everyone moving together like a wave. Champeta’s roots run deep here; Camila told us stories about its African influences while showing us how to let go and just move. There was bottled water on hand—trust me, you’ll need it—and by the end, my shirt was sticking to my back but I didn’t care. The whole room felt alive.
