The Experience

The day started way before my brain was ready—hotel pickup at 7:30 sharp, but I guess that’s how you fit Cartagena’s wildest contrasts into one day. The drive out to Totumo Mud Volcano was bumpy and full of that sticky Caribbean heat. When we got there, the volcano looked smaller than I expected (not a mountain or anything), but stepping into that thick, warm mud felt like sinking into another world. It’s weirdly buoyant—you can’t really swim or sink, just kind of float around with strangers who are all laughing at themselves.
