The Experience

Someone hands me a bottle of cold water before we even start — it’s already sticky-warm, and I’m grateful. Our guide, Andrés, waves us over to the Cervantes monument in the square. He starts with a story about Caribbean ghosts that, honestly, makes me glance over my shoulder. That’s how he gets you — mixing real history and these wild tales until you’re not sure what’s true anymore. He calls García Márquez “Gabo,” like they were friends. Maybe they were? People here talk about him like an uncle who just stepped out for coffee.

I didn’t expect to stop at Palito de Caucho for a snack, but Andrés insists we try this sweet thing (I still don’t know what it was called). It tasted like coconut and sugar and something else I can’t name. The street smells like fried plantain and sea air. We pass the Hotel Santa Clara — he points out the balcony where “Love in the Time of Cholera” comes alive. There’s laughter from an open window above us, and for a second it feels like we’ve slipped into one of Gabo’s chapters ourselves.

Teatro Adolfo Mejía is quieter than I thought it’d be; sunlight bounces off its yellow walls. Andrés tells us about Enrique Grau and Luis Vincens — artists I’d never heard of, but apparently friends of Gabo. There’s something about seeing where part of Gabo’s ashes are kept that makes everyone go silent for a minute. Even the street dogs seem to pause. We walk past Calle del Estanco del Aguardiente and the University of Cartagena — so many names, anecdotes, weird little details about poets with crossed eyes or journalists who changed everything here.

By the time we reach El Mesón de Don Sancho, I’m half-expecting someone from one of Gabo’s novels to walk out onto the street. Andrés finishes with a story about Alejandro Obregón and Gabo that doesn’t really have an ending — just trails off into the heat. I still think about that view from Plaza de San Diego at dusk; maybe that’s why people call this place magical realism without even trying.
