The experience
What does it feel like to paddle through a forest that exists half in water? You navigate a traditional canoe through the igapó (the flooded woodland that appears only in the wet season), where trees seem to grow straight from the dark, mirrored water. The guide poles or paddles the canoe while you watch the canopy reflect in the still surface, listening to the calls of birds, the rustle of leaves, and the water lapping against the hull. Monkeys swing through branches overhead; sloths cling to trunks; caiman and river dolphins move through the deeper channels. The guide knows where to look and what sounds mean.
You stop in designated areas to swim. The water is cool and dark, the rainforest rising all around you, not a pool or a beach, but the river itself, contained and safe. After three hours on the water, private transportation brings you back to Leticia. Children from age 4 can come along. Infants sit on an adult's lap in the canoe. The guide speaks English, Spanish or French, so you understand what you're seeing as it happens.
