The Experience
The day starts with hotel pickup between 6 and 7:30 am in an air-conditioned van, then a 45-minute drive through Cartagena to reach the Barú Peninsula. You'll cross the Barú Bridge, which connects the mainland to what was once accessible only by raft until 2014. The route passes the Corles del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park without stopping, but the panoramic view frames what's ahead.
Once on Barú, a five-minute walk brings you to Playa Blanca and the Mambo Beach Club, where you spend the afternoon with access to sun loungers, huts, lockers and bathrooms. Your lunch voucher covers 30,000 pesos of the menu, eaten with your feet near the water. In the late afternoon, a native boat takes you into the mangrove swamps to snorkel among different fish species and their habitat; you'll also learn how mangroves anchor the ecosystem and get the chance to feed and interact with the fish. The mangrove tour is the only time you're in the water before dark.
As night falls, you board another boat with local islanders to watch the bioluminescent plankton. These organisms produce a brilliant light when disturbed—like stars or diamonds moving through the water—and they're responsible for more than half the oxygen in the atmosphere. The boat ride is the highlight most travelers mention, and it's why the tour runs so late into the evening.
