The experience
The tour starts with a flight from Bogotá to La Macarena (or Villavicencio if Bogotá flights are unavailable that day), followed by a welcome lunch and a botanical garden walk where bird watching and photography happen in the afternoon. From there, the route stays within the park and its river system for the next three days, moving by boat, horseback, and on foot between named sites.
Day two centers on El Raudal, where the Guayabero River narrows from 200 meters to 30 meters through a gorge carved into rock, leaving behind ancient petroglyphs visible from the water. After the boat journey, a hike along the Miradores trail leads to the City of Piedras or the Aguas Claras trail (confirmed the night before based on local conditions), with a swim and lunch before the return to La Macarena by horseback and boat. Day three follows the Guayabero River by boat, then branches into a horseback ride to the Lagoon of Silence, where non-motorized canoes carry you across calm water. A walk leads to Ricardo's cabins for a regional lunch, then to Caño Cristales itself for a swim in the warm water before the ride back to town. The final morning is a wildlife boat ride, breakfast at a local farm, and a flight back to Bogotá between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Accommodation is in single or double rooms in La Macarena hotels. The operator notes these offer basic amenities and most do not have hot water. All meals come from local restaurants, served in typical Colombian style, often wrapped in banana leaves on the trail. A Spanish-speaking guide leads the entire tour. English headset translation is available for an additional cost. All transport within La Macarena (boats, motorcycles, 4x4 vehicles) is included, as are the national park fees.

Caño Cristales displays its vibrant hues from June through November, and you'll visit the river on day three of the tour. You'll reach it after a boat ride down the Guayabero River, a horseback ride to the Lagoon of Silence, and a canoe paddle across the lagoon's calm water, finishing with a swim in Caño Cristales' warm waters.
