The experience
The tour starts at your hotel at 9 am, where your guide meets you in the lobby and takes you by public transport to the South Gate of Xi'an's ancient city wall. You'll walk around the gate and climb to the top of the wall itself. If you want to rent a bike and cycle the wall, that's available at your own cost. From there the route continues to Shuyuanmen Street, a restored cultural street built in the architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, where you can see how people in Xi'an actually live and shop.
After a lunch break (your guide will suggest places, though you pay for your meal), you walk to the Square of Bell and Drum Towers. The Bell Tower sits opposite the Drum Tower in the city center. Historically, the bell rang at dawn and the drum at sunset to mark the day. Both are landmark examples of ancient Xi'an architecture. Your final stop is the Muslim Quarter, the hub of the Muslim community in the city, home to about ten mosques. The Great Mosque in Huajue Lane is the most famous: one of the oldest, largest and best-preserved Islamic mosques in China. Your guide escorts you back to your hotel by public transport when the tour ends.

The South Gate is the entry point to Xi'an's ancient city wall, one of the most intact defensive walls from the Ming dynasty still standing in China. The tour begins here so you can walk around the gate and climb to the top of the wall itself to see the city from above.
Can I bike on the city wall instead of walking?
Yes, you can rent a bike at the top of the wall and cycle along it, but the rental is at your own expense and separate from the tour price. Walking is the default. Biking is optional.
What is Shuyuanmen Street and what will I see there?
Shuyuanmen Street is a restored cultural street built in the architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Walking down it lets you experience the everyday life of Xi'an residents, with shops and streets designed to reflect how the city looked centuries ago.
Is the Great Mosque in the Muslim Quarter open to visitors?
The Great Mosque in Huajue Lane is the most famous mosque in Xi'an's Muslim Quarter and one of the oldest and largest Islamic mosques in China. Your guide will take you through the Muslim Quarter to see it and explain its significance. Entrance is included in the tour.
Does the tour include lunch?
Lunch is not included in the tour price, but your guide will suggest restaurants and places to eat during the break. You choose where and what to eat at your own cost.
How much walking is involved over the six to seven hours?
The tour is built around walking through three neighborhoods (the city wall, Shuyuanmen Street and the Muslim Quarter) with public transport between them. You'll be on foot for most of the day, though the pace is set by your group and your guide adjusts to your comfort level.
