The experience

The journey starts with a bullet train from Hankou station at 8:30 am, arriving in Shiyan after which a one-hour transfer takes you to Wudang Mountain. Day one focuses on two major temple complexes: Crown Prince Slope, a Ming Dynasty structure built into steep terrain over 400 years ago and recognized by architects as a masterwork of slope construction, and South Rock Palace, rebuilt in 1413 and expanded to 460 rooms by the 16th century. This palace sits on one of Wudang's 36 sacred rocks and blends human architecture with natural landscape in ways the site is known for. You overnight in a local 4-star hotel within the scenic area.

Day two begins after breakfast with Purple Clouds Palace, a 2,740-square-meter imperial temple complex and the largest wooden structure on the mountain. The centerpiece is the ascent via cable car to Gold Top, a bronze-cast hall built in 1416 and perched at 1,613 meters on Tianzhu Peak's highest point. The hall measures 5.5 meters tall, 5.8 meters wide and 4.2 meters deep: a single unified bronze casting. Reaching Gold Top on foot is considered the true completion of a Wudang pilgrimage. After descending, you take a bus back to Shiyan and board the express train at 18:39, arriving in Hankou at 22:21.

Your English-speaking guide accompanies you throughout the mountain portion. All private transfers between stations and the mountain, both bullet train tickets in second class, entrance fees to Wudang Mountain, round-trip cable car and shuttle bus rides, one night's accommodation and breakfast are included. Dinner on day one and breakfast on day two are provided. Lunch is not included in the itinerary.

What exactly is Crown Prince Slope and why is it considered architecturally important?

Crown Prince Slope is a Ming Dynasty temple complex built over 400 years ago directly into steep mountainside terrain. Architects recognize it as a classic work of construction on slopes because of how its buildings are integrated into the natural landscape rather than imposed upon it, making it a significant example of ancient Chinese building technique at Wudang Mountain.

Can I reach Gold Top on foot, or do I have to take the cable car?

You take the cable car up to Gold Top, the bronze hall at 1,613 meters. Walking to the summit on foot is considered the traditional way to complete a Wudang pilgrimage, but the tour uses the cable car for the ascent and descent.

What is South Rock Palace and when was it built?

South Rock Palace is one of Wudang Mountain's 36 sacred rocks and was rebuilt in 1413 during the Ming Dynasty. It was later expanded to 460 rooms by 1552. Taoism regards it as holy land and the most beautiful location on the mountain because it faces south and represents the perfect blend of human construction and natural rock formation.
