The experience
Huaqianbei is Asia's largest high-tech electronics market, where hundreds of vendors move millions of dollars in goods by the minute. The tour walks you through the stalls where electronic gadgets are sourced and shipped worldwide, then moves to Dongmen old street, a shopping district locals have used for daily bargains since the Qing dynasty. Dongmen is also where China's first McDonald's opened and where street food vendors line the pedestrian zone.
The route then passes through the Louhu port area, one of the oldest border crossings between Hong Kong and China, officially opened in 1950. Along the way you'll see the neighborhoods where Shenzhen's worker class lives, and the areas that became a playground during the 40-year boom when the income gap between Hong Kong and Shenzhen was nearly tenfold. Next to the port sits the region's largest counterfeit merchandise mall, a stop that shows another side of the city's rapid growth.
Your guide speaks English and leads the group through the markets and streets at a pace that lets you stop and ask questions. Metro transport between the main stops is included, so you move between districts without arranging separate tickets.
