The experience
Songzanlin Monastery opens the day. Built in the traditional Tibetan style, it's known locally as the little Potala Palace for the way the whole structure rises in layers across the hillside. The monastery is the largest of its kind in Yunnan, and your guide will walk you through its layout and history. From there you head to a Tibetan family home in the area, where you sit down for lunch (yak butter tea and a meal cooked in the family kitchen), and get a sense of how people actually live in the region outside the main town.
After lunch the route moves into Pudacuo National Park, where Shudu Lake sits in one of the world's most biologically diverse zones. The park occupies less than one percent of China's land but holds more than a fifth of the country's plant species, roughly a third of its mammals and birds, and nearly 100 endangered species. The lake itself is tranquil, and the walk around it takes you through the landscape the region is known for. The day ends with a transfer back to Shangri-La city and your hotel.
