The Experience

Your guide meets you at your Shanghai hotel and takes you to the railway station for the 35-minute bullet train ride to Suzhou. The Lingering Garden comes first—a classical Chinese garden with pavilions, bridges and courtyards that show how the city's wealthy lived centuries ago. Your guide explains the architecture and the philosophy behind the design as you walk through.

Lunch happens on Pingjiang Road, a restored street lined with boutique shops selling tea pots, ceramics, fans and silk. You'll eat Suzhou-style dishes—Cherry meat, Beggar Chicken and Liquor Xiaoyuanzi are the specialties—then have time to browse the storefronts if you want to pick up something. The road itself is charming enough to walk slowly through, and the guide knows which shops are worth stopping in.

After lunch, you board a boat for a ride along the Grand Canal, a UNESCO Heritage Site and the world's longest artificial waterway at over 1,100 miles. You'll see how locals live along the water, historical buildings and red lanterns reflected in the canal. Then it's on to Tiger Hill, where you climb 300 stairs to reach the Cloudy Pagoda, built more than 1,300 years ago and tilted slightly—locals call it Suzhou's leaning tower. The hike is steady but not technical. Once you've seen the pagoda and the view from the top, the bullet train takes you back to Shanghai, and your guide returns you to your hotel.
