The Experience
The first thing I noticed was how early the city starts humming — Beijing’s streets were already busy when our driver pulled up right on time. He waved, said something cheerful in Mandarin (I just smiled back), and we set off toward Mutianyu Great Wall. The car was cool inside, even though outside it was that sticky summer heat. I remember watching the city fade into green hills, and thinking how fast everything changes once you leave downtown.
Our driver, Mr. Zhao, didn’t say much at first but pointed out a little village market as we passed — there were bright umbrellas and people selling peaches by the roadside. He handed us bottled water with a nod. The drive took about an hour and a half from our hotel, which honestly went by quickly because I kept staring out the window at all those fields and mountains. When we got closer, he gave us these tiny red amulets — apparently for good luck on the wall. Mine still smells faintly like incense, or maybe that’s just in my head.
I didn’t expect Mutianyu to feel so peaceful compared to what I’d heard about other sections of the Great Wall near Beijing. There were families picnicking below and just a few tour groups scattered along the towers. We had four hours to wander (or climb — my legs felt it), plus there’s this cable car if you don’t want to hike up. At one point I tried to ask Mr. Zhao how many towers there were here; he grinned and held up his fingers: two-three — twenty-three towers along this stretch. I laughed because my Mandarin is hopeless.
No shopping stops, no pressure — just time to walk, breathe in mountain air, and listen to cicadas buzzing above us. On the way back I dozed off for a bit; woke up as we rolled back into Beijing traffic with sunlight slanting through the windshield. Still think about that view from tower 14 sometimes — kind of sticks with you.
