The experience
The session starts before dawn. A private vehicle picks you up at 3:30 AM and drives you to a secluded riverside location away from the daytime tourist crowds. By 5 AM you are on-site setting up your tripod in near-total darkness, receiving final coaching on camera settings for extreme low light. The fisherman lights his ancient gas lantern as the sky begins to shift from black to deep blue: the window when the lamp's glow is brightest against the water and the karst silhouettes are still sharp. This is the blue hour, and it lasts roughly an hour. Your guide helps you frame for reflections on the still water and manage ISO and shutter speed as the light changes.
By 6 AM the sky warms toward gold. The fisherman casts his net repeatedly, each time positioned and timed to your direction, so you capture the arc of the cast, the spray, the birds diving: the moments that define the image. The cormorants are professionally arranged on the bamboo raft, not performing their actual fishing routine. The guide stays close, offering on-the-spot tips for framing and exposure as the sun approaches the horizon and the mist on the water catches the warm light. By 7:30 AM the golden hour is fading. You wrap up and drive back to your hotel by 8:30 AM.
This is a one-on-one session, not a group tour. The guide is both your photographer and your technical coach, and the fisherman is there to model the poses you want. You direct the shots. The guide ensures your camera is set to capture them. Meals and drinks are not included, and tipping the guide, driver and fisherman model is optional at checkout.

Top questions
What makes the 3:30 AM pickup time worth the early start?
The 3:30 AM pickup gets you to the river before the blue hour begins at 5 AM, so you are set up and ready when the gas lantern's glow is brightest against the darkest sky. This timing guarantees the most striking contrast between the lamp and the water: the shot that draws serious photographers to Guilin.
Can the fisherman repeat the net cast so I get multiple versions of the same shot?
Yes. The fisherman and his cormorants are professionally staged on the bamboo raft and will repeat the net cast and lantern pose as many times as you need to get the exact shot you envision.
Will the guide help me with camera settings if I am not sure about long exposure in low light?
Your guide is an avid photographer and actively coaches you on technical settings throughout the session. Expect on-the-spot tips for managing ISO in extreme low light, long exposure framing, and positioning to maximize reflections on the water.
What is included in the four-hour session, and what costs extra?
The session includes one-on-one guide coaching, round-trip hotel transfer by private air-conditioned vehicle, and the professional cormorant fisherman model fee. Meals, drinks and travel insurance are not included. Tipping the guide, driver and fisherman is optional.
