The experience

The tour splits between two ropeways and a guided hike through the Western Hills. You start with the Dianchi Lake Cable Car, which carries you over the sparkling water for panoramic views of Kunming spreading across the distance. From there, the Dragon Gateway Ropeway takes you higher into the hills, setting up the main event: the walk to the Dragon Gate itself. The stone steps climb through Buddha statues carved directly into the rock face, and when you reach the top, you stand at an overlook where the blue waves of Dianchi Lake and the city skyline reflect each other across the horizon.

The ancient Taihua Temple sits hidden in the greenery of the hillside, and your guide walks you through its courtyards where incense smoke and the sound of bells create a quiet, solemn atmosphere. Afterward, you stroll Camellia Street, a shopping lane lined with vendors selling everything from Yunnan ethnic costumes and handicrafts to specialty snacks and creative gifts. This is where most travelers pick up a souvenir. Something small and specific to the region that fits in a bag.

The tour runs four to eight hours depending on your pace and how long you linger at each stop. Your guide speaks English and knows the history of each site. Depending on which option you choose, pickup and dropoff from your hotel is included, or you can arrange your own transport and meet the guide at the Western Hills entrance. Public transportation options are available nearby if you prefer to get there independently.
