The Experience

“You know, this market was here before my grandmother was born,” our guide Li said, waving at the old brick facade of Western Market. I could smell something sweet—maybe those candied nuts from the stall nearby—mixing with the damp air. We wandered through Cat Street next, poking at old coins and jade trinkets while Li haggled for fun. He explained how bargaining works here—it’s more like a game than anything serious.

Man Mo Temple surprised me most. The air inside was thick with incense smoke curling up towards hundreds of hanging coils; it made the sunlight look golden and soft. People were lighting sticks, bowing quietly—I felt like I should whisper too. We took the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator up through layers of city noise and color, ending up in SoHo where everyone seemed to be eating or laughing or both. My iced milk tea tasted sweet and strong after all that walking. The city felt different by then—closer somehow. I still think about that view from the escalator late in the afternoon.
