Hong Kong & Kowloon Food Walking Tour: Both Islands in One Day
Sheung Wan to SoHo: Markets, Temples, and Three Food Stops Across Two Islands
A 6-hour walking tour of Hong Kong and Kowloon with an English-speaking guide covers both islands in a single day: most tours stick to one. You start with a traditional breakfast in a crowded neighborhood, move through Mong Kok's markets and a Michelin-starred wonton restaurant, cross Victoria Harbour by Star Ferry, then walk Hong Kong Island's escalators, antique shops, and food districts. The route traces colonial history, local temples, and the contrast between dense residential streets and upscale Central.

The experience
Most Hong Kong tours split between the island and Kowloon, but this one crosses both. You begin in a dense neighborhood packed with locals eating breakfast at a traditional spot, surrounded by electronics markets, seafood stalls, and apartment blocks stacked tight against each other. From there the guide takes you to Mong Kok, the center of Kowloon where office workers and teenagers shop for sneakers and trendy clothes. The Mong Kok market and the goldfish market sit side by side, and then you stop at a Michelin-starred wonton noodle restaurant to taste the beef brisket and wonton broth the neighborhood is known for.
A bus ride brings you to Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade to see the Hong Kong Island skyline across the water, then you board the Star Ferry. The historic double-hulled boats that have crossed Victoria Harbour since 1888. On the other side, Central rises around you: one of the most expensive districts on earth, full of skyscrapers and pedestrian bridges. The guide explains the colonial history and how Hong Kong grew into an international city. You ride the Hong Kong Tramways, the world's largest fleet of double-deck trams, from the upper deck to watch street life unfold below.
The Mid-Levels Escalator (the world's longest outdoor covered escalator system) carries you upward through layers of the city. As you ascend you pass Hollywood Road's antique and collectibles shops, then arrive in SoHo, the trendy district south of Hollywood Road. Here you taste dim sum and pan-fried buns at two famous spots. Walking back down Hollywood Road toward Man Mo Temple, built in 1847, you see the old Chinese architecture and the neighborhood where many expats live. Cat Street follows, lined with replica antiques and zodiac accessories, and the tour ends at Sheung Wan, Hong Kong's oldest district and a historic hub for Chinese immigrants. The guide shows you the dried seafood shops that supplied communities across the world, and you finish at the metro station.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 11 years). Children under 4 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What food do you actually eat on this tour?
You taste a traditional Hong Kong breakfast in the first neighborhood, then a Michelin-starred wonton noodle bowl with beef brisket in Mong Kok, dim sum in SoHo, and pan-fried buns at a second SoHo restaurant. The guide chooses the stops based on what each neighborhood is known for.
Do you ride the Star Ferry as part of the tour?
Yes. The Star Ferry crossing Victoria Harbour is included, and you travel on the historic double-hulled boats that connect Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. It's one of the main ways the tour covers both sides of the harbor in a single day.
What is the Mid-Levels Escalator and why does the tour include it?
The Central–Mid-Levels Escalator is the world's longest outdoor covered escalator system, running uphill through the city. The tour uses it to move between neighborhoods while passing antique shops, markets, and the transition into SoHo, so you see the layers of Hong Kong life as you ascend.
How long does this tour take?
The tour runs 6 hours total, covering both Kowloon and Hong Kong Island with multiple food stops and walking between neighborhoods and landmarks.
Is Man Mo Temple a working temple or just a tourist stop?
Man Mo Temple is a working temple built in 1847 that still serves the neighborhood. The guide shows you the old Chinese architecture and cultural practices inside, so you see how the temple functions as a living part of the community, not just a historical site.
Can you do this tour if you're not comfortable walking for hours?
The tour includes public transportation (buses, the Star Ferry, trams, and the escalator system), so you're not walking the entire 6 hours continuously. You walk between stops and through neighborhoods, but the guide uses transit to cover distance and give your legs breaks.
