The experience

Four hours is enough to see the core of Xian without eating the whole day. Your guide and driver pick you up from your hotel at either 8:30 in the morning or 1:30 in the afternoon, you choose when you book, and head first to the Xian Museum. The museum sits alongside the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, and together they hold the city's most significant artifacts. Your guide walks you through the collection and explains what you're standing in front of, rather than leaving you to read placards alone.

From there you move to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, which rises inside the Da Ci'en Temple complex. The pagoda is a National Key Cultural Relic Preserve. It holds Buddhist relics and classical texts that the monk Xuanzang brought back from India centuries ago. You'll walk around the pagoda and the square that surrounds it, seeing how the structure fits into the temple grounds. After you finish, your driver takes you back to the hotel.
