The experience
Yumen Pass sits 1.5 hours from Dunhuang, a square fortress standing in the Gobi that once guarded the ancient Silk Road from western invasion. Your guide meets you at your hotel lobby and drives you there in a private air-conditioned vehicle. At the pass, you board a battery bus to explore the site and climb the tower. From the top, the landscape spreads out: scattered ruins, ravines, the winding Great Wall, and tall poplars creating an atmosphere of deep time. The pass itself is two thousand years old, a strategic checkpoint where merchants and armies once passed through.
From there, the tour moves to the Han Dynasty Great Wall Ruins, built between 101 and 121 BC and stretching over a thousand kilometers across western China. Unlike the masonry structure most people picture, this wall was made from branches, reeds, sand and gravel: materials at hand in the desert. Millennia of weather have worn away its original form, but the outline remains visible enough to read the ingenuity of the people who built it under such harsh conditions. The wall played a crucial role in protecting merchants traveling the Silk Road, allowing trade and exchange of goods and information to flourish.
The final stop is Yadan National Geologic Park, the largest Yardang landform site discovered so far. A battery bus takes you through the park to four main sites where you have free time to photograph the wind-sculpted rock formations: shapes locals have named Mongolian Bao, Stone Bird, Peacock and others. When strong winds move through the desert, the formations produce sounds that earned the park its nickname, Yadan Devil City. The tour ends with a return transfer to your Dunhuang hotel.

What is Yumen Pass and why does it matter to Dunhuang's history?
Yumen Pass was a strategic fortress built two thousand years ago to protect Dunhuang from invasion along the ancient Silk Road. It stands as a square castle in the Gobi, and climbing to the tower gives a view of the surrounding landscape (ruins, ravines, the Great Wall and desert poplars) that shows how the ancient people positioned this checkpoint to control the trade routes passing through.
How old is the Han Dynasty Great Wall and what was it made from?
The Han Dynasty Great Wall was built between 101 and 121 BC, making it over two thousand years old. Instead of stone masonry, it was constructed from branches, reeds, sand and gravel: local materials available in the desert. The wall stretched over a thousand kilometers across western China and protected merchants traveling the Silk Road, allowing trade and cultural exchange to continue safely.
What makes Yadan National Geologic Park different from other desert landscapes?
Yadan is the largest Yardang landform site found so far, featuring wind-sculpted rock formations that create unusual shapes: some resembling the Potala Palace in Tibet or the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. When strong winds pass through the formations, they produce distinctive sounds that gave the park its nickname, Yadan Devil City. The battery bus tour takes you to four main sites where you can photograph these one-of-a-kind natural formations.
Does the tour include meals or drinks?
The tour includes entrance fees to all three sites, an English-speaking guide, private vehicle transport with air conditioning, and battery bus rides at Yumen Pass and Yadan National Park. Meals and drinks are not included, so plan to bring water and snacks or arrange food separately.
How long is the full tour and what time does it start?
The tour runs 6 to 8 hours total. Your guide picks you up from your hotel lobby in the morning and returns you to your hotel at the end of the day, so the timing fits a full day of sightseeing without requiring separate transportation arrangements.
