Forty meters underwater, inside a mountain, and between vertical cliffs: three worlds in a single day

A full-day tour from Chongqing visiting three sites shaped by water, war, and geology: the White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum (stone carvings submerged 40 meters below the Yangtze), the 816 Nuclear Project (a decommissioned Cold War facility with 12 miles of tunnels carved into Wuling Mountain), and the Wuling Mountain Great Rift Valley (a limestone chasm with cliff-edge boardwalks). Hotel pickup, entrance fees, bottled water and an English or Chinese-speaking guide are included. The full itinerary takes 10 to 12 hours. No special gear is required beyond walking shoes.

The experience

You start before dawn from your hotel and drive 1.5 hours to the Yangtze River. At the White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum, you descend 40 meters below the surface in a submerged steel chamber: the only place on earth where you stand dry and gaze through portholes at stone carvings over 1,200 years old. These Tang Dynasty inscriptions, poetry and river-level records were carved into a natural ridge that only surfaced during dry seasons. When the Three Gorges Dam flooded the area, China built a steel shell around the ridge to preserve it in place. You take a submerged escalator down and walk through a tunnel to the observation windows, where history floats silently outside the glass.

The 816 Nuclear Project is a decommissioned plutonium production facility carved entirely into Wuling Mountain: the largest man-made cave system in the world. Over 20,000 soldiers and engineers worked in absolute secrecy during the Cold War, digging 18 massive concrete-lined halls and more than 12 miles of tunnels deep inside the mountain. You walk through the reactor hall designed to house a 150-megawatt reactor, stand inside the giant computer room that never received its final equipment, and feel cold wind blowing through blast-proof doors weighing over 30 tons. It is a haunting monument to wartime paranoia and abandoned ambition: a secret underground city that never went critical, now open to visitors.

The Wuling Mountain Great Rift Valley is a raw, narrow slash through limestone hundreds of meters deep, where the sky becomes a thin white line overhead. A wooden walkway bolts directly onto vertical cliffs, leading you through ancient fissures carved by underground rivers over millions of years. You pass through the "Heavenly Gate," cross a swaying bridge between two peaks, and listen to water dripping from moss-covered rocks in near-silence. Unlike the man-made secrets of the nuclear project or the submerged history of the museum, this is nature's own hidden corridor: cool, damp, and dramatically untouched. After all three sites, your guide drives you back to your hotel.

What exactly is the White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum?

The White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum is the world's first and only in-situ underwater heritage museum, built around stone carvings submerged 40 meters below the Yangtze River. The ridge once appeared only during dry seasons and collected 170 inscriptions from Tang Dynasty scholars: ancient poetry, calligraphy, and the earliest known records of Yangtze river levels. When the Three Gorges Dam permanently flooded the area, China built a steel shell to protect the carvings in place, and visitors descend via submerged escalator and tunnel to observe them through portholes without diving gear.

How deep does the 816 Nuclear Project go, and what will I see inside?

The 816 Nuclear Project contains 18 massive concrete-lined halls and over 12 miles of tunnels carved into Wuling Mountain during the Cold War. You walk through the reactor hall designed to house a 150-megawatt reactor, stand inside the giant computer room that never received its final equipment, and pass through blast-proof doors weighing over 30 tons. The facility was built in absolute secrecy by over 20,000 soldiers and engineers and remained hidden from public knowledge for nearly 40 years.

Is the Wuling Mountain Great Rift Valley safe to walk through?

The Wuling Mountain Great Rift Valley is accessible via a wooden walkway bolted directly onto vertical cliffs, leading through ancient fissures carved by underground rivers over millions of years. The path includes a swaying bridge between two peaks. No special climbing gear is required, though the terrain is narrow and involves walking at height. Moderate physical fitness is recommended.

How long is the full tour, and what's included in the price?

The tour runs 10 to 12 hours from hotel pickup to return. Included are hotel pickup and drop-off, entrance fees to all three sites, bottled water, an air-conditioned vehicle, and a live guide speaking English or Chinese. Lunch is not included, so plan to eat at one of the sites or bring your own food.

Do I need any special equipment or fitness level for this tour?

No special gear is required beyond walking shoes. The tour involves walking and some elevation changes, particularly at the Wuling Mountain Great Rift Valley where boardwalks cling to vertical cliffs. Moderate physical fitness is recommended. The tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers, and infants must sit on an adult's lap during the drive.
