The experience

Eight to nine hours takes you through what locals call the 8D Magic City: a place where the geography itself seems to bend. You start at the Liziba Monorail Viewpoint, where the train actually glides through the middle of a residential high-rise, and then you ride the monorail yourself to feel that disorienting rush. It is the kind of thing that sounds impossible until you see it happen.

From there the tour moves through quieter corners: Kuixing Tower, tucked into Yuzhong District, where the staircases and floors seem to shift your sense of direction. Locals once climbed here to pray for academic success, and the views of the Jialing River still draw people back. Then comes the Yangtze River Cableway, the city's "air bus," which suspends you high above the water as it crosses from one bank to the other. The skyline and mountain terrain spread out below. You also walk Ciqikou Ancient Town, a centuries-old port settlement now filled with shops and teahouses, and pass through a thousand-year-old temple tucked between modern malls. Longmenhao Old Street, with its restored buildings and century-old trees, closes the day: indie bookstores and artist studios line the alleys.
