The experience
The day starts with a 7:50 pickup from your hotel and a half-hour drive to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, the largest panda center near the city. Morning is when the pandas are most active, so you'll catch them during feeding time: walking through the forested landscape to watch them play, nap and eat bamboo. The visit includes the panda nursery, subadult enclosure and adult compound, plus videos on panda behavior and breeding challenges. The whole stop takes about two to three hours, then you return downtown for lunch at a local restaurant.
The afternoon is a four-hour walking tour starting at Qingyang Palace, a Taoist temple over 1,000 years old in downtown Chengdu. From there you move through Culture Park to Qintai Road, an ancient-style street, then walk about ten minutes to Kuaizhai alleys: three parallel passages that mix old and new with renovated buildings, shops, restaurants and street food. You'll have time to try local snacks as you move through. Another ten to fifteen minutes on foot brings you to People's Park, where locals come to relax, play games and sing. Here you sit for tea at the open-air Heming Tea House, a place to slow down and rest after the walking.
The tour includes a one-hour calligraphy class with a local master at People's Park, where you learn simple Chinese painting and calligraphy. After tea and the class, you're driven back to your hotel.
Is this one for you?The tour starts at 7:50 and involves four hours of walking in the afternoon, so you need an early start and comfortable shoes. A private vehicle and guide mean the pace is yours to set, and the calligraphy class gives you a reason to sit and slow down before heading back to your hotel.
